Week 3- Ron Mueck's sculpture and Humanism

Mask II (2002) Ron Mueck

A girl (2006) Ron Mueck

1. Mueck's sculpture is described as 'hyper-real'. Define the meaning of this term and apply it to his work.
-"Hyper-real" which is same meaing of the hyperreallty. Hyperreality is an inability to distinguish between what is real and what is not. Hyperreality can be described as enhanced reality. Some people become more engaged with the hyperreal world than with the real world. But it has come to take on the meaning that society has given it. The reality of the crown and the hyperreality of what it stands for are interwoven.
The sculpture applyed the "hyer-real" because his work looks real baby which is above picture. And it looks real so that people can sceared and might think its the real person.
2. Mueck is not interested in making life size sculpture. Find out why he is more interested
in working with the scale of the figure which is not life size, and mention 2 works which use
scale that is either larger or smaller than life.
- while he was on the interview, he said that he is not interested in making life size sculptuer.
"never made life size figure, because it never seemed to be interesting.,we meet life size people every day."

This sculpture is smaller then the other works that Mueck has made. But when you see the sculpture closely, you still can see the fine details on it. Also two women's face expression exploses the real persons are looking something weird,..

This sculpture exploses the dead chicken with the really huge size of the sculpture.
In this work we can see the idea of the large form of the dead chicken. Ron Mueck creates larger and smaller scale works with fine details.

3. Define Renaissance Humanism , and analyze the term in order to apply it to an example of Mueck's work. Note that the contemporary definition of Humanism is much broader than the Renrssance definition
-Renaissance Humanism was an activity of cultural and educational reform engaged by scholars, writers, and civic leaders who are today known as humanists. Humanism is the term generally applied to the predominant social philosophy and intellectual and literary currents of the period from 1400 to 1650. The return to favor of the pagan classics stimulated the philosophy of secularism, the appreciation of worldly pleasures, and above all intensified the assertion of personal independence and individual expression. Zeal for the classics was a result as well as a cause of the growing secular view of life.
Renaissance Humanism  is relate to Mueck's works. Because Ron Mueck's sculpture is based on Humanity and he create life size of it or more bigger. He shows us that how poeple think by his sculpture.

4. Research and discuss one of Mueck's sculptures that you might find challenging or exciting to experience in an art gallery. Describe the work, upload an image of the work, and explain your personal response to the work. Comment on other student blogs to develop the discussion around the variety of our own personal and individual responses to art and design

‘Old Woman in bed’

installation photograph

I really like this sculpture, because when I saw this sculpture I can feel that the old women had hard time and feels tired.. and the edge of the blinket is very detail with the old women's expression. Its very hyperreality. So that's why people call Ron Mueck is the hyperreality artist.

  1. The the piece of work you have chosen is facsinating, and I agree that it does have the fine detail and focuses on the dstinctive features of a human being. The whole idea of 'hyper-real" interest me greatly as the sculpture is also not in a realistic scale therefore making the artwork look more interesting. The fine detail on the artork that you have chosen draws mmy attention in greatly because it looks so realistic. Because of he scale and the distinctive features, it draws my attention in more, to take a closer look in all the details to every wrinkle, age spot, hair etc.

  2. i also am really interested in the sculpture you chose. You said you can see an old woman who has had hard times and its almost a mystery which draws you in trying to see if she is just a very old woman who is tired or someone who has hard times. the details in which mueck has gone into not only on old woman in bed but all others really are fascinating and have this hyper realism and appear realistic down to the very last detail. the scale i think really does top the scupture off as it is out of the ordinary and really draws you in.

  3. When i researched this artist , i saw that sculpture you chose lastly. i think, it show detail and he described the old women's face and skin color as same as real person. Also , as you mention , he is hyperreality sculpture artist that word(hyperreality) is absoultely fit with him because when we admired his working it really similar with reality .Personally, when i saw his working , i can easily imagin what he want to say to viewer. like the last sculpture what you chose, it tell to us about the old women's hard time and little bit rest just during the sleeping and then the wrinkle also help to descibes the women 's life .

  4. the sculpture which this artist has made are aiming for fine detail by looking at other perspective points. such as what you have mention about this artist creating sculpture not according to the real life size, with the element of "hyperreality", i find that this way of creating art is really fascinating, this is due to the way how this artist think before he creates each sculpture; not just by how we look at things, but pay a lot more attention to detail in order to create small size sculpture with fine details just as much as normal size things.

  5. All of the sculpture you have chosen is very stunning and attractive to me.The sculpture are really realistic and full of fine details, although none of them are real.I really likes the word'Hyper-reality' .All of his art works is real hyper, loud, fascinating and real.Like the old woman in bed, when I look at it I can actually feel how she actually felt. The artists is trying to convey a message that an old lady on the bed is having a hard time, probably suffering from cold and tough life.It makes me feel a little sad when I look at it,because is seems so real.

  6. I like the sculpture you have chosen it is easy to relate to and you get a vivid understanding of what its about. By looking at the lady you can see that she probably had a rough life and struggled to get through it. The way the sculpture has been designed makes it so real-life looking, it is realistic and has a whole lot of detail which then puts you in that situation of guilt, almost sorrow for this lady even though its not real. I find the way the artist model has put that perceptive on the audience very fascinating and creative.
